Twilight Zone

That's where I felt like I was when I went to my appointment with Dr Feler this morning. I don't know if I'll be able to do this story justice, but here goes....

Last time I saw Dr Feler (neurosurgeon), my appointment was in Memphis. For my follow up appointment this morning, he was actually coming to Union City for the day. They told me, or so I thought, to go in the East entrance to the hospital, take the elevator to the 3rd floor, and the reception area was right when you get off the elevator. Easy enough.

I walk in the East entrance go the elevator and push the top button only to realize that the button I pushed was for the 2nd floor. There wasn't a button for the 3rd floor, just a sign that said, "To go to the 3rd floor, don't push any buttons". Union City Hospital is really old, so that didn't seem odd to me.

I rode the elevator to the 2nd floor, let the door open and close, and waited to go to the next floor. Nothing happened. So, I push a button to open the door, step out and push the up button, get back in. Nothing happened. Ok....maybe I should start over. Push the 1st floor button, go back down. Door opens, step out, push the up button, back in, door closes. Nothing happened. Ok...maybe I should get out, let the door close completely, push the up button, get back in, door closes. Nothing happened. Forget the elevator, I'm late.

Where are the stairs? I find the stairs, walk up 3 flights, while thinking about how sad it is that my legs are burning, get to the top, try to open the door.....it's locked. Nice. Ok...back down 3 flights of stairs. Now I'm thinking that I have to find someone b/c I'm really late. There's no reception area or any human in sight, or I would have already asked how the heck you get to the 3rd floor.

Just as I'm about to go find someone, Dr Feler and his nurses walk in. They had just gotten there. Oh, thank goodness. So I explain in kind of an excited mumble that I've been trying to go to the 3rd floor and couldn't get the elevator to work. I step on to ride with them and one of the nurses explains that you can't take the elevator to the 3rd floor without using the phone right beside the elevator. What? I'm questioning in my head why they won't let me ride the elevator with them, but I thought that maybe I had to call to check in or something like that.

So, back off the elevator, pick up the phone, push the button, wait, push the button again, wait. Finally a lady answers. I tell her that I need to come to the 3rd floor. She rudely questions who I need to see. I say that I'm there for an appointment with Dr Feler. She says....."He's not on this floor.....this is the psychiatric ward and alcohol rehab floor". Nice. I've been trying like crazy to get to the psych floor for the last 10 minutes, which is where I felt like I needed to be at this point. Turns out Dr Feler was on the 2nd floor.

I could go on and on about the other 10 things that made me feel like I was in the twilight zone, but for the sake of time, here's the quick update on the actual appointment. When I saw Dr Feler in Memphis they did not run all of the lab tests they were supposed to, so I had to have more blood drawn today. The tests they ran in Memphis came back normal except my hematocrit levels were low, which translates to anemia. Nothing new. I'm most interested in the tests he ran today. Hopefully they will show something. I should know in a week or two.

Hungry Hungry Hippo

Miles is a very predictable baby. Every day he eats four 7-8 oz bottles, two stage 2 veggies mixed with some cereal, and a stage 2 fruit mixed with 5 Tbsp of cereal. In other words, he's a big eater. If at some point during the day he doesn't eat any part of this food combo, he will be up in the middle of the night wanting to eat.

Yesterday he decided he didn't want his 4pm bottle. Not sure why....but he wasn't having it. He ate his bedtime food around 8:30pm and went to bed for the night. I told Darrin before we went to sleep that he would be up. At 11:30pm he started crying. I let him cry for a little while. He wasn't going to stop. So, I fed him 6 oz and he went back to bed.

At 3:30am, he started crying. Again, we let him cry....until it turned into all out sobbing. Darrin got up and fed him 6 oz and he went back to bed.

Despite how it looks from his chubby cheeks, we don't feed him every time he cries. He's always eaten on a schedule. That's actually one of my things....I always try to investigate to see if it's something else. I've learned his cries, and last night he was definitely hungry.

Feed me, feed me, feed me!

We tried some yogurt melts and some sweet potato puffs. This was his reaction.

Funny Stuff

When I got Miles out of his car seat tonight this is what his hat looked like. He was smiling so big as if he knew how funny it looked.

6 Month Dr's Visit

Miles' 6 month appointment was today. He LOVED playing with the paper on the exam table. We had to pull it down several times before Dr. Bates even came in. Since Miles is always such a laid back baby, it was nice to see him play a little more aggressively. I wasn't sure he had it in him :) Sorry, the video is sideways.

He weighed 18lbs, 15oz (73rd percentile) and was 28.5" tall (97th percentile). I can't remember what his head measured, but it was in the 80 percentile range. Dr. Bates said he looked great, and to keep doing what we are doing. Still no sign of teeth, but no worries. He got 2 shots and didn't even cry. What a tough little guy.

6 Months Old Today

Happy 1/2 of a birthday Miles!

New Playroom

It didn't take long for us (me) to feel like the house was closing in on us with all of Miles' gear. Our house is a decent size for 3 people....3 bedrooms, 2 baths, an office, eat in kitchen & dining room etc....We really like where we live b/c so many of our friends are within walking distance.

The first idea we had was to finish the attic. We had 2 contractors come to look at the house. Both estimates came back at $42-45,000. Not at all what we were expecting, and far too much to invest. We would never recoup that in our neighborhood.

The second thought was to look for another house. Those of you who know us well, understand that moving has never been an issue for us. We've been married 8 years and have lived in 5 different places. There's nothing on the market right now that would work, plus our house is perfect, financially speaking.

So the idea that won, was to convert our formal dining room to a playroom. I didn't love this idea at first b/c I prefer to use rooms for their intended purpose. However, Miles rules all now and he needed a place for his toys. I love how it turned out. All it took was a large rug and 2 gates. The gates are two fold. The primary purpose is to keep the dogs out. The second purpose is to keep Miles in. Moms with mobile kids have told me that we would appreciate this one day.

As I type he's playing in his new room. He's been playing contently for a while. I think he likes it already.
