Several weeks ago, after a long weekend of baseball, I really had some concerns about Miles' energy level. As I said, it had been a long weekend of baseball, but he just didn't seem to have the same amount of energy that the other boys had.
This has been a concern of mine for a while. I remember talking to his pediatrician about it at his 7 year check up (almost 3 years ago). In my opinion, he lacks stamina and always complains of being tired.
After that weekend of baseball, I finally decided I was concerned enough to take him to the doctor. We've checked his iron before, but I wanted that checked again along with other vitamin levels. Darrin took him to the appointment. After some blood work, the doctor decided to do an EKG just to make sure his heart was functioning properly. She said an enlarged heart can cause poor energy. All the blood work came back fine, so we just had to wait on the EKG and thyroid results. The nurse called the next day to say that his thyroid results were normal. A week went by and we never heard about the EKG. I assumed they just forgot to call. The nurse finally called and said that the EKG came back abnormal and they wanted him to see a cardiologist. Woah.
They actually had an opening the next day, which happened to be the last day of school. He had to miss a little bit of his class party, but it was worth it to get some answers. The three of us went to the appointment. They did an echo cardiogram and another EKG. It was a little bit of a painful wait, but everything came back normal. The doctor asked a bunch of questions about his lifestyle and none of them rendered any answers. Darrin and I scratch our heads that he is a very good eater, that we limit his screen time and ensure he gets exercise, and that we provide a loving home and yet he's lethargic compared to his peers.
Lyme disease will unfortunately always be in the back of my head with him. For me, he shows some of the signs. When I've talked about it with my doctor in the past, he basically said that until his symptoms are profound enough there's not much to do. He does take the same homeopathic vials for Lyme disease as I take, just a different dose. Without compromising his privacy too much, he does struggle with anxiousness often and from what I've read, that can be an energy killer. Darrin and I have a plan going forward to see what we can do to ensure the best health and energy possible. We are both so thankful that his heart is perfectly healthy.
